Route Overview

Picture this: We set off on an exhilarating journey, tracing the breathtaking coast path of the Wild Atlantic Way. Our adventure begins in the vibrant city of Cork, and we ride clockwise, hugging the coastline all the way up to the charming town of Westport. From there, we venture across the majestic Wicklow Mountains, conquering the scenic Sally Gap.

Our route takes us through some of Ireland’s most iconic passes, including the stunning Healy Pass and the winding Conor Pass. And of course, no trip would be complete without experiencing the legendary Ring of Kerry.

This ride is designed for those who crave the thrill of the open road, free from the constraints of motorways and tolls.

It’s a journey for riders who seek the camaraderie of like-minded adventurers, all while soaking in the unparalleled beauty of Ireland.

There are some long days ahead, and the mileages will certainly attest to that. But fear not, as the hotels we choose will offer the utmost comfort and secure parking for our bikes. Along the route, our stopping points will add a touch of interest and excitement to the trip.

Imagine enjoying the lively craic during dinner and at our overnight stops – this has to be one of the friendliest places I’ve ever visited, and it’s even better when experienced on a bike!

Keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable, so we need to be prepared for anything. After all, we are in the enchanting Emerald Isle.

It is remarkably close, offering a wealth of attractions. The road infrastructure is of excellent quality, markedly better than those in Great Britain. There are numerous activities and sights to enjoy, and the locals are welcoming and pleased to see bikers enjoying their visit.

This is a ride to the Emerald Isle, passing through country lanes and roads.

The roads are much better than here in the UK, with few, if any, significant potholes.

The weather can be warm; it can be wet and when it’s wet, it’s really really wet! Some of the days are long both in terms of mileage and riding time so you will need to be sure of your riding stamina.

The roads can be twisty at times. This is a riding holiday, so time spent in stopovers is quite minimal. We probably won’t get chance to visit cathedrals or do walking tours.  Speeds – the motorway limits are 120kmH, or approx. 72mph; your bike will need to be able to keep a reasonable speed if we end up using the motorway.

Speed limits in towns and villages are generally 50kmh (~30mph) unless otherwise stated. Regional roads tend to be 80kmh (~50mph). National roads are at 100kmH. Petrol – just like in the UK, stations are everywhere. Variety of food and drink – all part of the travel experience, good food and good beer and wine.

We’ll find a restaurant to enjoy each day where we can enjoy reminiscing about the day and some playful banter. It’s your holiday, so please ride at a pace that suits you. If you want to go off on your own, then please do so. Or, if you want to stay in a group, then again, do so – it’s always your choice.

But always ride for yourself!
